It's time for the people to have their say ...

There is a long history of the influence and importance of opinion polls in society. From the unofficial straw polls conducted by The Harrisburg Pennsylvanian that predicted Andrew Jackson's US presidential victory in 1824 [thanks Wikipedia!] to the influence of public opinion pushing for the ousting of the Whitlam government in 1975, the ability to survey public opinion has long been a crucial element in the ongoing definition of society.

It is with this knowledge in mind, that I draw your attention to the first of (hopefully) many Farrago Online blog polls, located for your convenience in the side-bar to the right. Farrago has its own long history of tackling only the thorniest and most contentious issues, and the Farrago Online blog is no different. We are attempting to get to the bottom of a question that has weighed heavily on the minds of some of history's greatest thinkers:

Baby corn - mana from Heaven or Lucifer's lunch treat?

The poll will be open for about a month, after which we will publish the results of this pioneering audience research right here at the Farrago Online blog - the home of miniature vegetable-related disputes.

Seriously though.

Baby corn.

The great and powerful Seb (of Farrago Politics editing co-fame) has brought an important point to my attention:

The word I have used in this post and in the baby-corn poll is 'mana', although this word is more frequently spelled 'Manna'.

A quick hunt on Wikipedia reveals that an archaic spelling of 'Manna' is 'mana', although I have to confess I have done no further research on the topic.

Anyone got any ideas, or do we go with Wikipedia on this one?

I do enjoy a hearty meal of baby corn and vinegar, though it can slow my responses somewhat. I also feel that we all have a baby corn-shaped hole in our hearts, waiting to be filled.

Baby Corn is without any doubt, evil. It's cunning. It makes itself sound more attractive by the term baby yet it really serves no function. It is most certainly the work of Satan.

Scott - the spelling of man(n)a has often tripped me up as well.

I grew up with the simply astounding SNES video game "Secret of Mana" (by Squaresoft) so I've always opted for that spelling. But then maybe that's just the fault of the person who chose the English title (it's not a direct Japanese translation)....

anyway...

die baby corn die!

As far as I know, baby corn hasn't hired any consultants to spend months debating its own inherent deliciousness, and then issued a media release in which the consultants pronounce, "delicious!", without any critical reflection or thought to their own personal tastes at all. So lets not tar baby corn with the Bracksy brush, Dave.

Tom - baby corn is like tofu - it picks up the flavours of other ingredients and counterbalances stronger/spicier things. You don't hate on tofu for being bland. And for God's sake, don't eat it out of a can! Buy it at the greengrocer, slice it up, marinate it in something delicious and then grill it on a skewer with various vegetables and some cashews. I defy you to find baby corn prepared thus not wholely awesome.

Unless, you know, you're PREJUDICED against it or something.

i cannot answer this questionnaire. there is no option which condemns all corn.

it is a terrible "vegetable", if that is its real name.

if pressed i would choose BC as it is smaller. it was interesting about the husk, also.
